Since its founding in 1972 by musician‐composer Bill Vanaver and dancer‐choreographer Livia Drapkin Vanaver, The Vanaver Caravan has stood as a vibrant force in the Hudson Valley arts community. Rooted in a mission “to inspire, through dance and music, the harmonious co-existence of world cultures and traditions,” the nonprofit has crafted an extraordinary repertoire that weaves Appalachian clog dance, Lindy Hop, Senegalese gumboot, flamenco, and modern/world fusion within a joyful and inclusive framework.
Touring internationally and grounded locally in New Paltz, the Caravan offers deep arts‐education programs—from schools outreach to adult workshops—and ensures accessibility through scholarships and community events.
Harvest Fest is a perfect exemplar of this ethos: held at Stone Ridge Orchard, the autumn fundraiser invites the whole family to participate in music, dance, apple picking, pumpkins, and cider—all in support of the Betsey Bergman Scholarship Fund that ensures young dancers can access the Caravan’s programs.
In the arc of the Vanaver Caravan’s journey—bridging world dance, community engagement, and cultural celebration—Harvest Fest stands out as a festive, rooted moment where harvest traditions, arts education, and local generosity mingle in full throttle.
