Art and Science, Making and Knowing in a 16th-Century Artisan’s Workshop

Location: Taylor Hall, Room 203 The Art Department’s Belle Ribicoff Lecture will be presented by Pamela H. Smith, the Seth Low Professor of History at Columbia University and founding Director of the Center for Science and Society and of The Making and Knowing Project (www.makingandknowing.org). Smith’s lecture examines the intriguing late 16th-century anonymous manuscript, Ms. Fr. 640 (now held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France). The technical and artistic “recipes” contained in Ms. Fr. 640 provide an opportunity to explore the epistemic and historical intersections between craft-making and scientific knowing.
