Compass is a trio blending Indian raga and tala, flamenco, jazz harmony, and deep groove into a unique compositional voice. The North Indian rhythmic form, theka, serves as a sophisticated foundation for exploring time and polyrhythm. Across centuries and migrations, the Gitano diaspora’s influence links this concept to the Spanish compás, forming a cultural and historical connection. The trio’s name, Compass, symbolizes both a tool for finding one’s way home and a structure for musical time. Comprised of guitarist James Labrosse, tabla player Tripp Dudley, and sitarist Galen Passen, Compass integrates tradition and original composition into their performances.
