Augusta Savage, a renowned sculptor who lived in Saugerties in the 40’s, created the monumental sculpture Lift Every Voice and Sing, which was featured at the 1939 World’s Fair. It honors African-American music through the portrayal of 12 singers with arms raised to create the silhouette of a harp.
The evening will include a performance of 'Lift Every Voice'; a showing of the recent PBS documentary 'Searching for Augusta Savage,' which includes footage of Savages’ Saugerties home; a reading about a childhood friendship between a local resident and Savage; and poetry about Savage. Books will be available from Inquiring Minds.
