"The paintings attempt to achieve a balance between representation and abstraction. The orientation, which side is up, can affect the balance in favor of one or the other. The two halves of the paintings are not mirror images, nor are they identical to each other in shape, brush stroke, or color. The unusual orientation of parts of the painting dampens their representational power and allows them to be seen as abstract shapes interesting or beautiful in themselves.
