The word “Gilded” captures it all: opulent architecture, extravagant fashions, stunning art, and above all, the wealth that made it possible. Artists in particular have used the precious metal to bathe sacred figures in golden auras, to luxuriate in its incorruptible beauty, to draw our attention to what is precious and otherworldly.
Contemporary artists Dan Burkholder, Beth Haber, Janine Lambers, Julia Santos Solomon are using traditional gilding processes with gold leaf and paint to build their worlds.
