This semi-autobiographical, dream-like fantasy from the mind of Academy Award-winner Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli is headed for another Oscar. It is also the first non-English language animated film and first 2D animated film to win a Golden Globe. After Mahito loses his mother in a fire, he moves with his father to the countryside. He soon befriends a pesky heron who claims his mother is alive and leads him to an abandoned tower in the woods. There they discover an alternate, magical world that reveals his mother’s secret.
