In David Becker’s new paintings mannequin-like creatures with giant eyes and biomorphic/mechanical forms present themselves within feathered cloud-like backgrounds. Figurative forms transmogrify into quasi mechanical shapes inferring biomorphic & Surrealist complexities. Fear may be present, but at the same time a tone of nonchalance is enforced by a muted palette of grays, browns and painterly organic hues. These are the paintings of David Becker born in 1950, based in Hudson, New York. Becker works within a modernist abstract approach, rooted in drawing, process and subject. He takes cues from an affinity for Spanish Renaissance painters and uses the earthy tones that cue a feeling of old world Europe; but his compositions are squarely mired within 20th & 21st century conflict.
