Park Chan-wook’s latest firecracker of a film is based on The Ax, the darkly comic novel by the great mystery writer (and former part-time Columbia County resident) Donald Westlake. Squid Game star Lee Byung-hun plays an out-of-work South Korean family man on an increasingly nihilistic mission to secure a new job by eliminating the competition. Park’s darkly comic thriller, which swirls with shifting motivations, is as wild and audacious as his earlier films, including his cult-making classic Oldboy. A Film Columbia 2025 selection.
