Visitors will hear about Mount Gulian’s centuries-long history that shaped our nation, including its part in the Revolutionary War as Patriot General Frederick von Steuben’s headquarters; the founding at Mount Gulian in 1783 of the Society of the Cincinnati, our country’s oldest veterans’ organization; and the history of generations of Verplanck family members who lived at Mount Gulian. Visitors will also discover the fascinating stories of James F. Brown, an enslaved man who risked his life for freedom, and of Robert Newlin Verplanck’s participation in the Civil War as an officer in the US Colored Troops (USCT).
