A retired Irish couple, Stella and Gerry Gilmore--played by Oscar-nominees Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) and Ciarán Hinds (Belfast)--fly to Amsterdam for a midwinter break. For them, it is a holiday to refresh the senses and to generally take stock of what remains of their lives. But amongst the icy canals we see their relationship fracturing beneath the surface. And when memories re-emerge of The Troubles back home, things begin to fall apart. Based on Bernard McLavery's 2017 novel, the newly released film adaptation of Midwinter Break is a stirring meditation on faith and the enduring power of love.
