Material Girl

This summer, the Athens Cultural Center presents Material Girl, curated by Lisa Corinne Davis. On view June 6–July 20, the exhibition features eleven multigenerational, self-identifying women artists who expand the possibilities of painting through puncturing, weaving, dragging, and layering. These works explore the physical, poetic, and political power of paint, transforming the medium into gesture, texture, and topography. Influential voices like Polly Apfelbaum, Lynda Benglis, Nanette Carter, and Brenda Goodman appear alongside a rising generation, offering a rich, sensory experience. Material Girl sparks intergenerational dialogue and feminist inquiry, elevating both process and message in contemporary abstraction.
