Guardians Against Evil Dreams: Sculptures and Works on Paper

Like the striations of an abraded cliff face or the battered and scarred surface of a bronze age shield, Jebah Baum’s recent work evokes a sense of resistance. Baum harvests and makes his own materials, thus imbuing his art with an intensely physical presence. The accumulated gestural marks in his sculptures and works on paper reflect a rigorous engagement with form, but nothing appears to be in stasis and his repeated overlaying of shapes, lines and textures creates a bulwark against direct association.
