The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra’s “Late Idyll” offers a concert of striking contrasts—Nordic fire and pastoral warmth. Under Maestro Russell Ger, the program pairs Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, a haunting, virtuosic work brought to life by soloist Christina Bouey, with Brahms’s radiant Symphony No. 2. “These works feel like the composers are having a private conversation with you,” says Ger. “They both whisper and sing.” Sibelius’s concerto, written by a composer who once dreamed of being a violinist, shimmers with icy tension and fevered passion. Brahms’s symphony, often called his “pastoral,” unfolds with lyrical beauty and a triumphant close. Together, they create what Ger calls “a grand intimacy”—two masterworks that balance technical brilliance with deeply personal expression.
