CARMEN

Good Deed Entertainment
Natascha McElhone, right, with Steven Love in “Carmen,” a comedy drama about a woman whose quiet church life bursts with new purpose when she’s mistaken for a priest.
What happens when 30 years of quiet service turn into a case of mistaken identity? That’s the spark that drives this vibrant comedy drama, starring Natascha McElhone, having its Kingston premiere. Since age 16, Carmen has lived in the shadow of her brother, the priest in their small Maltese village. When he dies suddenly, a twist of fate leads the villagers to believe Carmen, now in her 50s, is his successor. Rather than correct them, she steps into the role — challenging patriarchal norms, offering unconventional (and surprisingly effective) advice in the confessional, and discovering her own voice and independence.
