The award-winning film will be screened at 7 p.m. Jan. 17 at Congregation Emanuel, 243 Albany Ave. in Kingston, as part of the Movies With Spirit community film series.
Carmen has spent her life since age 16 caring for her brother, the local priest in their small Maltese village. When he dies suddenly three decades later, a twist of fate leads the villagers to mistake her for his successor. Instead of correcting them, she steps into the role, challenging patriarchal norms, offering unconventional (and surprisingly effective) advice in the confessional and discovering her own independence and voice. Inspired by true events, this vibrant comedy drama stars Natascha McElhone and is praised by critics as “joyous,” “charming” and a celebration of a long‑overlooked woman finally coming into her own.
