Freedom: In Their Voices honors composers of African descent whose music has been sidelined for decades and in some cases, centuries. Included in this program are composers such as R. Nathaniel Dett, H. T. Burleigh, and S. Coleridge Taylor, as well as more contemporary settings of spirituals by Hall Johnson, Wendall Whalum and Undine Smith Moore. Additionally, there will be readings from people born as slaves about their journeys to be free. Joining Ars Choralis will be bass Steven Kirby, the Riverview Baptist Church Instruments of Praise Choir, and the performance artist, Nancy Ostrovsky.
