Singer, songwriter, performer, and visual artist Anohni first played Mass MoCA in 2003 with Antony and the Johnsons, between the releases of the band’s powerfully wistful and brooding debut and sophomore albums, Antony and the Johnsons (2000) and I am a Bird Now (2005). A name change to Anohni came with the release of her first solo album, 2016’s Hopelessness; after a 13-year hiatus, the rechristened Anhoni and the Johnsons reappeared with last year’s My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross.
