DESCRIPTION: There are plenty of ways to collaborate on a work of art. Knowing what your collaborators have done is usually considered helpful. “Exquisite Corpse Redux\,” a special exhibition and fundraiser at 68 Prince Street Gallery in Kingston\, embraces a more surprising arrangement: Everyone works partly in the dark. The exhibition\, on view August 14–17\, revives the exquisite corpse\, a collaborative game adopted by the Surrealists in Paris during the 1920s. In its classic drawing-room version\, one participant draws part of a figure on a sheet of paper\, folds the paper to conceal most of the contribution\, and passes it along. Each player adds another section while seeing little—or none—of what came before. Only after the final addition is the complete figure revealed\, often as a wonderfully illogical creature assembled from clashing bodies\, styles\, and imaginations. The Surrealists were drawn to the game’s reliance on chance\, secrecy\, and spontaneous association. Artists including André Breton\, Man Ray\, Yves Tanguy\, Joan Miró\, and Max Morise used it to circumvent the orderly habits of the conscious mind. No single participant controlled the final work\; its meaning emerged through collective invention and accident. “Exquisite Corpse Redux” expands the format beyond drawing. Participating artists\, makers\, and writers have created drawings\, sculptures\, and poems in sequence\, keeping earlier contributions hidden from those who followed. The resulting works promise strange narratives\, unexpected visual collisions\, and the occasional beautifully mismatched limb. Among the participating artists are Theresa Batos\, Nancy Lasar\, Susan Lerner\, Joy Taylor\, Sue Muskar\, Christina Tenaglen\, Joanne Brockley\, Holly Sumner\, and Donna Senger. Their work will be sold through an old-school silent auction running throughout the exhibition\, with all proceeds benefiting People’s Place. The Kingston nonprofit has fed\, clothed\, and assisted area residents since 1972 through its food pantry\, thrift store\, Community Café\, Wellness Empowerment Center\, and other programs. The opening party takes place Saturday\, August 15 at 5pm. “Exquisite Corpse Redux” remains on view through August 17 at 68 Prince Street Gallery in Kingston.
